Tom Benjamin, PhD. – Minister of Music
Tom has been music director at UUCC since 1989. In addition to having led music programs in UU congregations for more than 35 years, Tom is a charter member of the UU Musicians Network, he serves on its national Board and various task groups, and serves as a mentor to UU composers. He has written music for, and guest-conducted at, dozens of UU churches nationally.
Tom has received degrees from Bard, Harvard, Brandeis and Eastman. He has composed works for all media, including symphonies, concertos, oratorios, cantatas, six operas and much choral and chamber music. Over 60 of his works have been commercially published and several are commercially recorded. He is author of two books on counterpoint, and is co-author of three music theory texts. He has won prizes in a wide variety of composition contests here and abroad and has received numerous awards, grants and commissions.
Also active as a clarinetist and choral conductor, Dr. Benjamin taught for many years at the National Music Camp (Interlochen), the University of Houston School of Music, and has just retired from teaching theory and composition at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, where he chaired the Department of Music Theory.
