PATH UUCC Update (#10) and Fundraiser

Written by Anne Gould on .

In recent months, PATH (People Acting Together in Howard) has continued to bring meaningful change to our county and to our state.  With the other member congregations in PATH, UUCC is meeting its mission to “to live our values and act within our community to make the world a better place.”

PATH, a member of the Maryland Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF), is now six years old. Our interfaith network is demonstrating how love and compassion are our springboard to action, to helping improve the lives of our children and adults of all ages. Most recently, PATH successfully petitioned our Howard County Council for funds to establish two Head Start classrooms in Long Reach for 36 children and to expand the students’ classroom time from 4 to 6 hours of education a day. Children in Long Reach, 3 and 4-year olds, have been commuting for over an hour each way to the Head Start Center in Ellicott City where many of their parents could not share their Head Start experience with them.

PATH UUCC Update

Written by Anne Gould on .

Much has happened since the last PATH (People Acting Together in Howard) update was issued. Now, we are preparing for our Spring Action on Monday, May 14, 2012 from 7:15 to 9:00 pm at St. John Baptist Church, 9055 Tamar Drive, Columbia. We hope to have over 300 people (including at least 55 UUCC members and their friends) at this Action because numbers speak loudly to the political leaders in our County. Our minister, the Rev. Paige Getty, will be giving the "Call to Action." Here are topics (and recent successes) that will be on our agenda (click on the Read More link for details on each of the following topics):

  • Home Care for Seniors
  • Restoring the Environment and Developing Youth (READY) (formerly referred to as the Youth Conservation Corps)
  • Stormwater Management
  • Female Swimming Time
  • Head Start classes in Long Reach
  • Green Energy Purchase
  • Maryland Dream Act Referendum

PATH UUCC Update #8

Written by Anne Gould on .

Much has happened since the last PATH (People Acting Together in Howard) Update in August. Now, we are preparing for our Fall Action on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 from 7:15 to 9:00 pm at the Oakland Mills Interfaith Center. We hope to have over 300 people (including at least 55 UUCC members and their friends) at this Action because numbers speak loudly to our political leaders in the County and in the Maryland General Assembly.

Youth Jobs and Storm Water Management Campaign
In our May 2011 Action, almost 400 people from 15 congregations and several organizations asked County Executive Ken Ulman and Councilwoman Courtney Watson to create jobs for our teens and young adults through the creation of a youth conservation corps where young people will be trained and employed to build rain gardens to impede the flow of storm water pollution into our streams, rivers, ponds and the Chesapeake Bay.

PATH-UUCC Update #7

Written by Anne Gould on .

In the PATH (People Acting Together in Howard) Countywide Action Team on July 28, 2011, the PATH Strategy Team was created. The members of the Strategy Team are: Kiara James (Locust United Methodist Church); Anne Gould (UUCC); Wendell Thompson (Bethany UMC); Guy Moody (St. John United Methodist Presbyterian Church); Sandra Picot (St. John Baptist Church); and, Jim Connolly and Amy Lamke (St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church). After introductions, attendees at the meeting voted to install the Strategy Team members present at the meeting.

Campaign on Aging: Katie DiSalvo, PATH's summer organizer (and currently a graduate student at Princeton) was formally introduced in this meeting. Katie joined PATH this summer to help PATH hone in on a more concrete strategy (or strategies) for addressing the many issues related to Aging-in-Place concerns, one of PATH's current major areas of interest. In a short time, Katie held over 75 meetings with members of PATH congregations (which included meetings with 20 UUCC members). She shared her findings that many of us have some real concerns on our ability to age in place in our county, others don't have immediate concerns but recognize that changes (financial and otherwise) could make them vulnerable, and that there appears to be no one issue, but in fact, multiple concerns, on the part of our seniors and their children.

Thank you, Elizabeth von Schlag
