You Want Germs With That?

Written by Jim Caldiero on .

If there's one person you want to have paid sick days, it's the person who prepares your food. Yet nearly 80% of food service workers in Maryland don't have access to a single paid sick day, posing a serious threat to public health.

The Healthy Working Families Act would allow tens of thousands of food service workers to earn paid sick days for the first time. But the restaurant lobby will stop at nothing to weaken the bill.

Now is the time to take action. SIGN THE PETITION: Tell Maryland lawmakers to pass an earned paid sick days bill that PROTECTS food service workers!

Monthly Styrofoam Collection begins March 12th!

Written by Steph Silver on .

Did you know that the Howard County Alpha Ridge Landfill accepts #6 styrofoam for recycling? How great is that?! Of course we all try to avoid non-sustainable and non-recyclables when we can, but sometimes we just can't find an alternative. Few of us generate enough to make the trip to the Landfill, but together we are more - in this case, in a negative way!

So save your #6 styrofoam at home, bring it on the second Sunday of each month, drop it in the collection bin, and know you've made one more step towards protecting our planet. Please rinse before dropping in the bin! Contact: Steph Silver,

Ends Monitoring Survey - Thank you!

Written by UUCC Board of Trustees on .

Last month, the Board of Trustees asked you to complete a survey to assess our success in meeting our congregation's ends. Over 100 of you responded, and we'd like to thank you for taking the time to give us your input. A small committee is currently compiling and analyzing your responses. The board looks forward to receiving the results and seeing where we are doing well and where we need to improve. Thank you so much for your participation!

SOCRATES CAFÉ IS BACK and is meeting the 2nd Monday, 7:00-9:00 PM of each month. This month we’ll be meeting on February 13th. Socrates Café provides a forum for people to explore philosophical questions in open and respectful dialogue. In a supportive and confidential setting, participants discuss what’s on their minds and assist each other to learn how to think, not what to think. The group generates questions to pursue with willing participants rotating facilitation. In the group, we will engage in a common quest to discover a better understanding of human nature. From Socrates: “Wisdom begins in wonder.” For more info, please contact Joy Bingham at

New Sunday Volunteer Sign Up Form

Written by Amanda Bates on .

On Monday, February 6th, UUCC will begin using a new online Sunday Volunteer Sign Up form. You will still be able to sign up through our website, however, it will be much easier to do so!

We will begin using SignUp Genius to manage our volunteer sign ups. What does this mean?

  • You can sign up to volunteer with or without a SignUp Genius account.
If you have/create a SignUp Genius Account you can edit your sign up dates and tasks without my help.
  • You will see how many slots are available for each task and how many are already filled.
  • You will get a reminder email two days prior to the date you signed up to volunteer.
  • You can choose whether or not to get a confirmation email with your sign up.
  • Each task instruction sheet is available at the top of the Sign Up page.
  • You can share your sign up quickly and easily on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest (#UUCCSunday).

Check out our new sign up page by clicking here. To see where to sign up from the UUCC Website, click here and then click on the "Volunteer on Sundays" button on the right side of the page.

And big thank you to Laurie Coltri for creating the original Sunday Volunteer Sign Up form and for managing it for the last several years.
