  • We are all Storytellers at Heart – Storytelling Evening Friday, March 24, 2017 7:00 pm Fellowship , Special Event

LTillmanAs a step toward greater understanding and building community, UUCC, along with co-sponsor the Howard County Conservancy, presents a Storytelling Evening. The event will be facilitated by Leigh Tillman, a graduate of the UUCC Young Religious Unitarian Universalists program, and a professional storyteller, trainer, and facilitator. Through her work, she has seen first-hand the power of personal stories in building community. Tillman says, “At the very essence of our lives, there are stories. We are sharing them with one another every day. These stories foster connection, put us in touch with our humanness, and compel us to act.”

The event will feature twelve storytellers who have lived or worked in Columbia for a number of years and who have been coached by Tillman. Their stories will weave a rich tapestry that reflects our community and help us better understand the nature, depth, and complexity of our town. By hearing their personal stories, audience members will come away with a greater appreciation of themselves, their neighbors, and their community.

  • We are all Storytellers at Heart – Storytelling Workshop Saturday, March 25, 2017 (2:00 pm - 6:00 pm) Fellowship , Special Event

LTillmanPersonal stories can build greater understanding and a sense of community. Such stories are often rich with meaning and poignant, and sometimes evocative. As a step
toward greater understanding and building community, UUCC, along with co-sponsor the Howard County Conservancy, presents a Storytelling Workshop. The workshop will be facilitated by Leigh Tillman, a graduate of the UUCC Young Religious Unitarian Universalists program, and a professional storyteller, trainer, and facilitator. Through her work, she has seen first-hand the power of personal stories in building community. Tillman says, “At the very essence of our lives, there are stories. We are sharing them with one another every day. These stories foster connection, put us in touch with our humanness, and compel us to act.”

In this workshop, you will learn how to tell your story better and about the craft of how to hone your story. Our hope is that through making the space to hear and share our personal stories, our understanding of our community's larger story is enriched and our curiosity is piqued to learn more of one another's tales. No matter if the stories you tell are for friends and family or for work, we all can become better storytellers.

  • How Big Is Our Tent? A Conversation on the First Principle Project Saturday, March 25, 2017 (7:00 pm - 10:00 pm) Creature Connection , Special Event

Sponsored by Creature Connection, UUCC's Animal Ministry

    Creature Connection Logo

Please join UUCC's Animal Ministry, 'Creature Connection', on Saturday, March 25th at 7pm for a conversation on the 'First Principle Project', a movement that asks us to consider what it would be like if our UU First Principle affirmed the inherent worth and dignity of every being (instead of person). It asks whether expanding this affirmation could lead to better lives for us, and for all life. And, it ultimately asks what it means to be human in a multi-species world, and what our compassionate response to that understanding should be.

Unitarian Universalists will be voting at UUA General Assembly 2017 on a one to two year study action considering making such a change in the wording of the First Principle.

Our very special guest for this conversation will be FPP Facilitator, UU Minister, and Wildlife Veterinarian Rev. Dr. LoraKim Joyner. She will give background on the history and development of the FPP, outline some of the issues involved, and guide us in conversation as we ponder our feelings and thoughts about other beings. This is an important and timely conversation, given the upcoming GA action.

  • Facing Death With Life Tuesday, March 28, 2017 (1:00 pm - 3:00 pm) Adult Religious Education

Join us for a program of personal reflection, learning, and spiritual growth focused on the topic of death and dying. It brings death, dying, and grief into the light of our daily lives and out of the dark, macabre recesses to which we often relegate it. The program is not a grief support group, nor is it an intellectual study of death. It includes sociological information and reflection, theological reflection, personal and shared narrative, creative expression, journaling, and practical learning and preparation. It helps participants move from viewing death as an abstract concept to developing a personal recognition of its meaning in their life, with the goal that all who participate in the program find a closer and more comfortable relationship with their own inevitable death. This program invites participants to experience death and dying as a healthy part of life, including the preparation, the moment of death, the grieving, and the living on. Tuesday afternoons, 1:00-3:00 pm, facilitated by Stephanie Lyon and Lowell Sunderland. February 21, February 28, March 7, March 14, March 21, March 28, April 4, and April 11. For more information, email Lowell Sunderland LowellSunderland4@gmail.com or Stephanie Lyon stephanielyon@comcast.net.
