Volunteers Needed! Help fight hunger in Howard County by joining a fabulous group of volunteers who prepare and serve a hot and nutritious meal to the homeless and hungry at 2 p.m. on the 4th Monday of each month at the Grassroots Day Resource Center. We serve a full meal to as many as 60 people. The meal includes hot entrees, salads, desserts, and drinks that are taken to the Center by UUCC and Bethany United Methodist Church volunteers.
In August, the Day Center moved to a newly-constructed building, the Leola Dorsey Community Resource Center, on Guilford Road east of Route 1 in Jessup. The space in the new building is very well equipped for serving meals, with built-in warming and cooling areas and a dishwasher. Meals are served on dishes that are not disposable. The new location has required some changes in the way we deliver, serve and clear meals and additional volunteers are needed.
These additional volunteers will supplement and join the dedicated group of volunteers who, for many years, have purchased or prepared food and drinks, served them and cleaned up before the arrival of the second shift of volunteers from the church that serves the 4 p.m. meal.
In addition to providing hands-on help, you may choose to donate money that is used to purchase food or other items that are needed.
The recipients of the meals regularly express their gratitude to us. Please consider volunteering so that we can continue to provide this service to a needy community. For further information and to volunteer, contact Betty Jackson or Betsy Osterman. Thank you.
