Board Minute — September 2024

Board Minute — September 2024

The UUCC Board of Trustees met Tuesday, September 10 for its monthly meeting. We met at our Owen Brown Interfaith Center, in person, with a Zoom link for those unable to attend in person. Except for some very minor technology glitches, it worked great!

The Board has a critical role in our interim period, working alongside Rev. Lisa to better understand who we, UUCC, are; where we’ve come from; where we could go from here; and what course-corrections or modifications we could make that could be helpful. This discernment task will be vital so we can be fully prepared to call a new minister (most likely in spring 2026).

At this month’s meeting, we started experimenting with some new ways of interacting which fit well into our congregation’s mission and values, which can build community, and which, in the words of Brenée Brown, are “good enough for now, safe enough to try.”

The first approach is “calling for pause“. This is a process of supporting a group member if they become “activated” – that is, if their fight-or-flight system becomes engaged under stress or difficult situations.

The second approach is the use of “discernment circles” to ensure that all voices are heard equitably in decision-making. Using a discernment circle, we began to try to understand the big landscape of UUCC stewardship by asking ourselves “what am I observing about stewardship at UUCC?” This is just the start of an intensive process of discernment for the Board.

Please do email us (board@uucolumbia.net) or talk to one of us when you see us. We’d love to connect with you, hear from you, answer questions, and better understand your thoughts and perspective. We hope you, like we on the Board, feel a sense of excitement and anticipation for what’s to come.
