Calling all Local UUs!

Calling all Local UUs!

We’re looking for a few intrepid local UUs to help with important GA tasks during and around GA. You don’t need to be registered for GA to take on these volunteer roles.

Accessibility Services Volunteer Need

First, we are looking for a few local volunteers who can help the accessibility team with unloading scooters on Tuesday, June 17 (the day before GA begins) and then loading scooters on Monday, June 23 (the day after GA ends). Our GA accessibility team will be busy setting up/breaking down the accessibility desk, so your assistance in unloading/loading scooters would be greatly appreciated. Here are the details:

  • When: Tuesday, June 17 (time TBD) and Monday, June 23 (time TBD)
  • Where: Baltimore Convention Center
  • Who: individuals with availability mid-day on weekdays who are able to work as part of a volunteer team to maneuver over 100 electric scooters off/onto the back of a delivery trailer
  • How: Email Ann Verdine-Jones, GA Accessibility Services Co-Lead, at verdinemba@gmail.com

Day of Service Volunteer Needs

Second, you may have seen the exciting announcement of a GA Day of Service in partnership with the South Baltimore Community Land Trust on Friday, June 20. A few roles we need help with:

ToolBank Pickup & Return. This role is for you if:

  • You have access to a truck, utility trailer, or utility van
  • You are available to pick up supplies in the morning on Friday, June 20 at the Baltimore Community ToolBank (1224 Wicomico St), deliver supplies to Curtis Bay Park, load supplies at the end of the day (after 7PM) at Curtis Bay Park, and return the truckload to the ToolBank on Monday, June 23

Day of Service Setup & Cleanup. This role is for you if:

  • You are available between 1PM-2:30PM on Friday, June 20

OR

  • You are available between 7PM-8:30PM on Friday, June 20

AND

  • You are able to be outside in humid weather for long periods of time
  • You are able to pick up trash, set up/break down tables and tents, move jugs of water, and other activities of a similar nature

Day of Service Greeters. This role is for you if:

  • You are excited and enthused to greet other GA participants as they arrive at the park and direct them on where to go
  • You are willing to commit to a 60-minute shift outdoors in humid weather (with a tent and lots of water)

Day of Service Transportation Navigators. This role is for you if:

  • You are comfortable taking public transit in Baltimore
  • You are willing to meet a group of participants at a designated meet-up time, proceed with them to the Convention Center bus stop, help people use the CharmPass app to purchase tickets, and ride with the group on CityLink Silver or LocalLink 67 to Curtis Bay Park

Day of Service Team Leads. We’re still finalizing the exact tasks that we’ll be tackling in Curtis Bay, but we anticipate needing a dozen or so team captains who can lead groups of UUs of all ages and abilities in tasks as varied as trash pickup, painting, fence building, gardening, indoor cleaning, and more.

For any of these Day of Service roles, please email Valerie Hsu, GA Local Area Coordinator, at galocaltaskforce@gmail.com with what roles you’re interested in.

Again, you don’t need to be registered for GA to help with these needs. So, can’t go to GA but really excited it’s coming to Baltimore? Here’s your chance to be part of the action even if your schedule doesn’t allow you to attend!
