Death of UUCC Member Carolyn Mateer

We extend loving condolences to family members and all the loved ones of Carolyn Mateer, who died on August 3, 2022 at the age of 97.

Carolyn joined as a member of UUCC in 2000. She served on the 2000-2002 Ministerial Search Committee which introduced Rev. Paige Getty to UUCC. During those years, “Carolyn preferred that the committee meet at her place,” recalls Kathy Tillman, who served on the Search Committee with Carolyn. “We would often gather at her place, and she would cook dinner for us, and we worked until late in the evening — we were a very bonded group!”

Carolyn also served our UUCC community by helping to lead Sunday services during the summer months for many years, often offering reflections.

Outside of UUCC, Carolyn loved her books. She was a former librarian and avid reader up through her final days. She had a remarkable mind and memory for all things literary, often demonstrating a striking ability to recall book titles, authors, and plot lines.

Carolyn was devoted to her family and took great interest in the keeping up to speed on the interests and life events of each family member. She will be missed by many.

To honor her legacy, Carolyn’s family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to organizations that help spread literacy, such as:

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Click here to read Carolyn’s obituary.

I have many fond memories of Carolyn. Particularly her summer sermons and thoughtful participation in my I&U Group (before Reflection Groups).
