Maryland allows marriage as early as 15 under certain circumstances. And once an under-aged person is married, they have little legal recourse to leave the union or even to get social services available to adults. Unchained at Last is an organization that is working in Maryland and other states to change these draconian laws. Although they have seen recent success in New York, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Rhode Island, Maryland failed to pass legislation to address child marriage for the sixth time in 2021. The unsuccessful 2021 bill didn’t even eliminate child marriage. It would have just raised the legal age of marriage to 17.
