Howard County Department of Public Works is expanding the food scrap collection area in the spring of 2022 (pink area-Zone5)!

Food scraps are transported to the Alpha Ridge landfill for composting. Composting food scraps is a win-win. It eliminates the methane production that would occur if the food scraps were buried in the landfill and it produces a useful soil amendment. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas. Composting food scraps helps slow down climate change.

Households in Zone 5 will receive a postcard with information on signing up. Participating households will receive a small lidded countertop container and one of 3 sizes of green bins. Sign up and participate!
