Hello World Religions families,
I’ve just received an email from Wat Thai Temple, requesting a change in date for our visit. NEW DATE: SATURDAY, March 10th at 9:00 am.
A quick reminder that we have a visitor (our own Graham Getty, who lived and studied in a Buddhist Monastery!) scheduled for Sunday, March 11th, and a visit to the Wat Thai Temple in Silver Spring for SATURDAY, March 10th at 9:00 am (NEW DATE!). If you need carpooling, we can gather at OBIC at 8:15 am. Please remember to sign up here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e44abac2aa3f49-uucc
Before:
- Spend some time with a couple or all of these videos to deepen your knowledge of Buddhism. Share one or two things that most interested you with your youth as a way of getting them excited about what they will learn:
- Stephen Prothero on Buddhism: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSf-zbOQXC4
- The Story of Buddha & Buddhism: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tilBs32zN7I
- Buddhism 101: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGJ1K4fT5sk&list=PLQ9_kWAQL7WB8-jgGYA3Q1ZJc-NPT-1rG
- Getting Zen with a Buddhist | Have a Little Faith with Zach Anner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ORErnXlS-A
- Wheel of Time (2003) Full Buddhism Documentary by Werner Herzog: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8Og2bYsPTM
After:
- In our centering worship, we will talk with the youth about Bodhisattvas – beings who could have attained nirvana but instead remained in the regular world in order to bring compassion and help teach others. As a way of personally connecting with the idea, we will ask the youth to think about their own “Bodhisattvas.” With this in mind, ask your youth about who in their lives has mentored them, shown them compassion or supported them on their way. Share your own “Bodhisattvas” with your youth to get the discussion started.
