We’ve noticed an uptick in email hacking and phishing attempts utilizing email addresses that look like UUCC staff, leaders, and groups, that are from people attempting to steal personal information by posing as people/businesses you regularly interact with.
Some tips to keep in mind:
- Our online Realm database is the only congregation directory that exists. Requests for a PDF directory or other directory information is a phishing attempt.
- If you receive a link to view photos, do not click the link unless you are expecting emailed photos from the sender.
- Examine the sender’s email address. It may look familiar but double-check it with known email addresses you have for the purported sender. UUCC staff email addresses end in @uucolumbia.net; UUCC staff will never email you from @gmail.com or @yahoo.com or any other domain.
When you receive emails like this, do NOT interact with them. You do not need to tell us you received it; UUCC has not been hacked. Simply delete the email. Or, if you feel comfortable, you can report it as phishing/spam to your email service provider.
