Climate Forum – How Can We Pare Down Residential Food Waste?

Presented by Dr. Sara Via, svia@umd.edu

A whopping 40% of all food grown in the US is wasted.  The waste occurs at every stage as food moves from field to fork, but the largest loss occurs right in our own homes.  Because all the energy, fertilizer, agricultural chemicals and water used to grow that wasted food is also lost, food waste is essentially just throwing valuable resources in the trash. Growing food that we waste also causes carbon emissions, adding to climate change while providing few benefits.  Reducing this tremendous waste of food is one of the top two individual solutions to the climate crisis, and you can do it right in your kitchen!!  Learn more about this important problem and get some ideas about how to slash food waste in your household.
