Music Lecture Series: Listen! with Tom Benjamin

Music Lecture Series: Listen! with Tom Benjamin

Listen! began 4 years ago, during Covid; Joy Cheung at TVIH (The Village in Howard) asked Tom Benjamin (UUCC’s former Music Director) if he’d give a lecture on music via Zoom. Tom agreed; somehow the series took off, and there have been 40 episodes so far.

The first episode, tackled the question “Is Music a Universal Language?” and at this point in the series we’re still not sure – the best answer seems to be “Yes and No.” Along the way, we’ve tackled all sorts of issues related to world cultures, history and the arts, with many, many YouTube examples, from the visual arts, architecture, the theater, literature, film, and all kinds of music from around the world.

Joy Cheung introduces each episode, and Alan and Laurie Coltri provide superb technical support, including slides and videos.

The series runs most years from September through May, usually on the 3rd or 4th Friday on the month, at 10AM. The next episode airs Friday, December 19 and is titled “De Gustibus Disputandum Est” (“Yes, you can argue about taste”).

Many episodes have been recorded, and a partial archive is being assembled by Joy Cheung; more info on access to upcoming and past episodes will follow.
