MS World Religions: Dinner and Drive Time Tips for May 3

Dear MS Parents,

We are drawing to a close of the year for the World Religions class. For the next few weeks, we will be covering Islam.
May 3 – Class
May 10 – Off for Mother’s Day
May 17 – Guests to speak about Islam
And that’s the end of the year! I will touch base with the teachers about whether we can manage an end-of-year celebration.

And enjoy these links to learn more about Islam with your middle schoolers!

Before:

  • Get a fun and informative introduction to Islam by watching the below video with your youth. Discuss your reactions. What did you learn? What surprised you about the Muslim religion? How were you challenged or intrigued?
  • Help your Youth connect with the Muslim faith in a powerful way  by watching with them of the inspiring life and witness of teenager Malala Yousafzai:
  • Also help your youth get to know another awesome Muslim teenager, Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), one of the most popular comic book characters in the past decade and the first Muslim character to headline her own book in Marvel history!

After:

  • In our worship time this week, we will explore how Muslims place the struggle against self-centeredness at the heart of their faith. In particular we will lift up the way Muslims frequently use the phrase “Bismillah”(“In the name of God”) before actions to remind themselves that those actions – and life – is not “always about me!”  As a way of opening up a discussion about this with your youth, watch and discuss these videos with them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYvoe8PWro0 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kdt-miOhGwI.
For You:

Spend some time expanding your own understanding of Islam. Here are some great places to dig in:
