An Announcement from OBIC’s Board of Directors

An Announcement from OBIC’s Board of Directors

To: Congregants of Christ United Methodist and Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia

From: OBIC Board of Directors

The OBIC Board of Directors wishes to share an important announcement. For over 50 years our owner congregations have been working together to breathe life into the mission and vision of the Owen Brown Interfaith Center supported by the OBIC staff and Board of Directors. This journey has had many joys and challenges.

At all times, the Board of Directors, who hold ultimate accountability for the physical plant, work to enhance the ministries of our owning congregations. We find ourselves at a crossroads when we examine how we do our work together. Many of you have served on the OBIC Board and know the many responsibilities that fall under the umbrella of the Board and the satisfaction which comes from providing this critical service.

Looking forward, after much research and discussion, we feel the Owen Brown Interfaith Center will be better served with a staff restructuring to operate much like the other Interfaith Centers in our community. The work of the OBIC Board of Directors has become much more operational (day-to-day problem solving) instead of governance (looking at big picture vision and mission). It has become clear that change in our staff structure is more in line with our perceived role of oversight. Our intent is to hire an Executive Director, a visionary, mission oriented individual with nonprofit expertise that include skills in finances (including budgets and their implementation), human resources (staffing), management (including, but not limited to, the physical plant) and marketing. Someone who will expand our visibility and availability to our greater community, working in collaboration with our owning congregations, and who will provide a bigger perspective beyond managing our physical plant. This is not a “religious position.”

The job description is available on OBIC’s website if you or anyone you know might be interested.

We are excited about this next chapter. We all know that change can be difficult. We look forward to what the right person will bring in filling these new and expansive responsibilities. This change in staffing will help us all be more aligned with the mission and vision of those who have come before us.
