OBIC Board Highlights — January 2024

OBIC Board Highlights — January 2024

Did you know that UUCC owns ~90% of the entity that is the Owen Brown Interfaith Center? We share ownership with Christ United Methodist Church (CUMC). You can learn more about this arrangement here.

The success of OBIC is integral to the success of UUCC: not only are we financially responsible for the operations of OBIC, but OBIC is a tangible way we live our pluralistic values here in Howard County.

OBIC is its own 501(c)3 nonprofit separate from the two owning congregations with its own management, staff, and board of directors. UUCC is represented on the board by 5 UUCC congregants. This year’s representatives are Linda Adcox-Kimmel, Ed Gaddy, Gregory Seidman, Lindsay Thompson, and Richard Yocum.

To help UUCC congregants understand and learn how to support OBIC (and UUCC as a result), our UUCC OBIC directors will share highlights and updates from the OBIC board here in this Good Governance blog.

The Board of Directors of the Owen Brown Interfaith Center met virtually on January 10, 2024. At the meeting, the OBIC Board elected their officers for 2024. The officers are:

President – Ed Gaddy (UUCC)
Vice President – Greg Swirdovich (CUMC)
Treasurer – Clara Fitzgerald (CUMC)
Secretary – Gregory Seidman (UUCC)

In late 2023, a sub-committee was selected to perform a long overdue review and modification of the OBIC Board by-laws. The sub-committee has completed an initial review, with associated recommendations. A report will be prepared and presented to the entire Board for review and approval, in part or in whole, through a series of motions. This review will be completed in early 2024.

The OBIC Board will be conducting a special strategy session on Saturday, January 27, 2024. The purpose of the session is to discuss the past and current activities of the Board, with a focus on continual improvement in our communications and operations to better serve the Owen Brown Interfaith Center’s members, renters, and guests.

After the January 27 retreat, the OBIC Board will meet again on February 20, 2024 via Zoom.
