Our Unitarian Universalist 5th Principle: The Right of Conscience and the Use of the Democratic Process Within Our Congregations and in Society at Large.

Since 2020, volunteers at UUCC have been putting this principle into action by educating and mobilizing voters through the Unitarian Universalist Association’s UU the Vote initiative. Collectively, we have made a difference, especially by encouraging members of communities typically underrepresented in the electorate to participate in the democratic process. But this joyful work never ends, especially in an election year with public officials and political candidates at all levels questioning democracy as the way to govern, and with ongoing efforts by nondemocratic forces to silence people’s voices.

This year we plan to join with other UU congregations in Maryland, DC, and Virginia doing voter mobilization work. To learn more, come find me at the UU the Vote table in Sanctuary B during social after service. Or if you can’t make it, you can contact me a vote@uucolumbia.net.

And I invite you to consider attending the Voter Mobilization Organizing School, being held at All Souls Church in DC on Saturday, April 27, from 10AM to 3PM. This will be a chance to gather in person for spiritual grounding, relationship building, and concrete skills training, all with the goal of engaging as many people as possible in the 2024 election! There is a registration fee on a sliding scale from $0 to $50. You can learn more about this event at Voter Mobilization Organizing School.

I hope to talk with many of you on Sundays during coffee hour!
