UUCC Immigration Task Force

UUCC Immigration Task Force

Last June, UUCC voted overwhelmingly to declare itself a Sanctuary Support Congregation. Since then, we have asked you to visit, write, call or email your U.S Representative or Senator to vote in favor of extending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, hosted a Howard County Multi-Service Center event that offered immigrant and refugee assistance, participated in an interfaith legal clinic for asylees, demonstrated at ICE headquarters in Baltimore with our interfaith partners in People Acting Together in Howard.

Now, we are announcing a new initiative. UUCC has formed a steering committee to become the lead UU congregation in the state, establishing an Immigration Task Force under the auspices of the UU Legislative Ministry of Maryland.

We plan to coordinate advocacy efforts with UU congregations and UUCC in support of several bills favorable to our immigrant community that are pending in the General Assembly, to present education forums and to host an evening with state legislators concerning immigration. After the General Assembly session ends, the task force will continue its advocacy efforts in Howard County and at the national level working with the Advocacy Corps and Immigration Task Force of the UU’s for Social Justice in the National Capital Region and with the UU Service Committee’s Love Resists program.
