Ways to Participate in the Food Insecurity Program – Cash or In-kind Donations and Helping Hands

Last week, through the UUCC Community Connection site on Realm and on Facebook we asked congregation members and friends to make financial contributions to the funding account for the Little Food Pantry (LFP).  Donations are coming in and we hope that they will continue so that we can continue to serve those in our community who have shared these comments with us:

  •       “It’s hard living on social security. It’s not enough.”
  •        “I have three kids; it’s hard to feed them on my salary.”
  •        “I live in one room with no cooking or storing facilities.”
  •        “I am ( or we are) homeless.”
  •        “Food prices are so high. I can’t afford many items like before.”

(See below on how you can help through Cash and Direct Donations to the LFP.)

There is another way you can help directly: volunteer! Our Food Insecurity Team members fill the LFP daily.  In addition, we collect and distribute generous donations from the Owen Brown Giant Grocery each Tuesday and Friday, all year round. (The store is open on holidays and our members pick up donations on these days because those in need don’t have holidays from hunger.) Most of these donations go directly into the large white Produce Box that is located under the trees, about 20 yards from the LFP, under the trees.

If you are interested in learning more about the work we do in filling the Produce Box and in filling the LFP, contact Anne Gould at aigould@comcast.net or (240) 274-2226.  We find this work very rewarding and think that others will too.

Donating to the FI account: Our program is totally funded by members and friends of our congregation; it receives no funds from the UUCC budget. You can make a monetary donation online (select ”Food Insecurity” from the menu) or make a check out to UUCC (note that it is for Food or Food Insecurity in the memo and send it to UUCC, 7246 Cradlerock Way, Columbia, MD 21045

Many members and friends are filling the LFP and the Produce Box with purchased and home grown items. Others are arranging for items to go directly to UUCC.  We send a generous thank you to all of you.

Visitors to our LFP and Produce Box frequently express their gratitude to UUCC. They tell us repeatedly that what they receive really matters on a day-to-day basis.
