On Thursday, June 28, 2018, a gunman took the lives of five members of the Annapolis Capital Gazette staff. One of those killed was Wendi Winters, a beloved, esteemed member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis and a long-time committed UU. Taking action in Wendi’s honor would align with who she was. Her children asked the Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of Maryland, which is our faith’s advocacy group in Annapolis, to prepare options for you to take action and contact your elected officials.
Please take time today and act. Below are sample letters that you may use to write to elected officials and to candidates for public office. Please personalize the letters if you feel comfortable doing so.
Sample Text 1.
Dear Candidate,
The gun violence that killed Capital Gazette reporter Wendi Winters, who was a member of my Unitarian Universalist faith community, and four of her co-workers is beyond acceptable. Your stand on what we do about this problem is very important to me. I urge you let me and all voters know how you plan to address all issues associated with gun violence in our state.
Sincerely,

Dear …
The Capital Gazette shootings and the death Wendi Winters, who was a member of my Unitarian Universalist faith community, remind us that even in Maryland we have not done nearly enough to stop gun violence. I urge you to make this issue a top priority for your campaign in November. It will be my top priority as I vote.
Sincerely,
