Each summer, our UUCC high schoolers travel to McDowell County, West Virginia to participate in a week-long service trip with Big Creek People in Action. We work on housing construction projects for community members to improve their living conditions because every person deserves access to safe and accessible housing. The dates for our trip this year are Sunday, July 20, 2025 to Saturday, July 26, 2025.
All rising 9th-12th graders and those graduating in 2025 are invited to join us on the service trip. While we’ll only be in West Virginia for a week, our pre-trip preparations and post-trip reflections are as much of the service trip experience as the week in West Virginia itself. Together, we’ll:
- Learn about the culture, economics, and social history of rural Appalachia (May-July)
- Work alongside Big Creek People in Action on housing renovation projects (July 20-26)
- Live together in covenantal, collaborative community (planning meals, rotating chores, etc.) (July 20-26)
- Plan and lead worship at UUCC on Sunday, August 31
If you have a teen who is interested in joining us for the trip, reach out to staff member Kelli Danaker, Kelli@uucolumbia.net.
